It seems that some folks have been playing with the mishies this past week! (Not to mention old mission friends and baptism in general.) They’re fun, aren’t they? Here’s hoping this meme will catch on.
The other big theme this week was Mormons and passive-aggressive behavior. That and alternative beliefs (once you’ve given up Mormonism). Meanwhile, the Mormon values voters were not happy with the use of the word “cult” — and are testing out the “I know you are but what am I?” strategy as a possible response. (Admittedly some of this Christian stuff is a little weird. OTOH, it’s not like the Muslim values crowd always gets along or anything.) John Dehlin posted a great video on strategies for civil discourse.
It’s time to celebrate Ada Lovelace day, and (on a less-happy note) it’s also time to raise awareness of domestic abuse. MormonStories.org is circling the wagons around LGBTQ loved ones. Women face some interesting challenges, and they’re not the only ones. (Don’t miss this chilling pro-life tale!)
So what’s up on Wall Street? Kuri rounded up some good articles about it. The parallel with the Tea Party has inspired some amusing commentary. And while we’re criticizing Obama, this story is one that shouldn’t be buried.
Now I think we need some good news and light questions: Who’s Mormon? Mormons can absolutely care about the environment and offer helpful tips! Anyone remember God’s second-favorite musical? Or shocking old-tyme ads? Also, get ready for Emily Pearson’s memior!! Then, don’t forget to play Music and the Spoken Turd!
Have a great Sunday and a great week!
What a cool post! I’m having a great time checking out all the links. Thanks a bunch! :oD (I somehow survived Stake Conference today with the mishies. Must agree with the crying and screaming babies… They may not be able to vote yet but they seem to know a bad show when they have to sit through one).
Wow, that’s a lot of LDS church you’ve attended! Your mishies are going to be really disappointed if you don’t get baptized. 😉
Heh, I’m afraid I’m a leprechaun gold sort of investigator rather than the usual golden ones. ;D
I’ve really had enough of going to church, tho. All the ‘you must be obedient’ and ‘thank god for Joseph Smith’ and ‘we need to build more temple’ stuff are having a numbing effect on my brain. 😛 If the mishies still want to come by I won’t stop them. I think they’re finding more things to think about than they had planned on. They tried to needle me into praying again today, so I told them that I thought the way it is supposed to work is that I first become convinced of their religion (believe in this humanoid god and divinity of Jesus, etc) and then I pray as a way of expressing my belief, but to keep praying in the hope of growing a belief out of the sheer repetition is both intellectually and spiritually dishonest. That quite shook one (or perhaps both) of them since they were speechless for a bit before mumbling something about work being a requirement of faith-building. But something was bothering them and they changed subject to making another return (lunch) appointment instead. 😀
That’s the danger of sending young Mormons on missions — they keep getting exposed to dangerous ideas!
