Sunday in Outer Blogness: I’m Back Edition!

chanson, July 24, 2011September 3, 2011

Sorry to have been so scarce around the Internets of late! I just spent three weeks at German camp — and I thought (since it’s vacation and all) I’d have way more free time than usual, but it turned out to be quite the opposite. On the positive side, my family and I all speak much better German than we used to. On the negative side, after spending the whole day in the train yesterday, by the time I reviewed all my SiOB links, it was so late that I just went to bed (so I’d be fresh to go back to work this morning), which means that SiOB is late and lite this week. So, my apologies, and I hope everything will be back to normal by next weekend!

This past week there were some really fun post series! At White and Delightsome, there were some hot new Mormon stories — which apparently inspired President Paternoster to share one of his hottest disciplinary councils. Also, Invictus Pilgrim is sharing memories from his mission. (Others have shared fun memories of girls’ camp and drive-in movies.) And a brand new blog Dictionary of Correlation blog is filled with fun new entries! (See also control of information.)

Here are some additional highlights from this past week:

As fun as Sunday School normally is, I can’t wait to hear how this class goes! Check out this interesting new insight about the “boiled frog” metaphor, and another new insight about arousal vs. consent. My never-mo SiL visited Temple Square, and found the space Jesus “strikingly beautiful” — a review a little outside the norm for the Mormon arts. Jesus’ General presents some fascinating new research on facsimile #2! And despite recent horrors, Norway is pretty cool.

Even if moving on is hard, sometimes you can’t go back. And sometimes you don’t want to.

And I’m looking forward to a fun week to come!

Wow!! The anonymous-yet-official mysterious oracle of the CoJC0L-dS has just officially admitted that Joseph Smith married multiple women, including teenagers and other men’s wives! And other interesting stuff about Mormon polygamy! This is big news because bringing up any of these fact (true and well-established as they are) has traditionally…

Which is more valuable: your “virtue” or your life? Unfortunately, some LDS girls are learning the wrong answer — and it turns out that that was the last straw that drove “Mr Deity” out of the church (h/t). Just get a load of the level of crazy obsession with “modesty”…

Just to be clear, I thought the ROOM was fantastic, the painted sky is really lovely. The Jesus itself is a little comical… but I do love the picture of us all under it!

I’ve steered clear of the “planet” discussion here at MSP and over at MM recently but then the reference to “Space Jesus” in this post reminds me that it’s not like observers are just randomly fixating on obscure LDS doctrines …

Chanson, glad you had a good time at German camp! You are awesome for going the extra mile and doing the column too. Also thanks for the shout out for White and Delightsome!

Louise — true, it’s a great picture! I wish I could have been there, but we’ve bought too many transatlantic plane tickets in the past few years….

[edit: wow, Ryan is almost as tall as his mom these days — I guess that step will be coming for my little family in the near future. And Fiona looks so much like that portrait of my mom from when she was that age! Adele is adorable as well — it’s great to see the pics even if I couldn’t be there.]

Chino — Space Jesus is awesome! It’s true that whole complaining-about-outsiders-fixating-on-obscure-doctrines thing is more off-putting than the obscure doctrines themselves.

Donna — thanks, and keep up the great work at W&D!
