Fiction at Main Street Plaza

Robert, March 29, 2007January 15, 2011

Coming soon to a browser near you, Main Street Plaza will be publishing fiction! Our first published piece will be “Love, Mormon Style,” by Bob Bringhurst. “Love, Mormon Style” was originally published in a short fiction anthology called In Our Lovely Deseret: Mormon Fictions. This is a humorous yet poignant story about a BYU student trying (and mostly not succeeding) to remain chaste, which we’re confident is a subject near and dear to the heart of each and every one of you.

Every Thursday (starting April 5) we’ll publish a new story for your reading pleasure. Pretty much the only rule for fiction on Main Street Plaza is that it must contain at least some aspect of or reference to Mormon culture, though Mormonism need not be central. Eventually, we’d like to work up to having a short story writing contest, so all you authors out there, get those creative juices flowing. In the mean time, we hope you enjoy reading a few different possible answers to the question of what constitutes Mormon art.

Reclaiming our stories, redux!

November 23, 2012November 23, 2012

Remember my discussion on reclaiming our stories? About how we should take every opportunity to tell our own experiences, instead of standing by and letting the church invent the “apostate” narrative, according to its own agenda…? Well there are some natural conflicts when it comes to being sure that your…

What Fills the Void When Church Leaders Sow Division?

November 15, 2024

Tell-tale signals of Mormonism seem to be fading faster than the label President Nelson rejects. In a 2022-2023 survey, fewer than half of Church members born after 1965 said they were actually wearing their garments on the day they answered the question. A 2016 survey found that only 45% of…

By the way, this story is a great one to start with!!!

It’s one of my favorites from the In Our Lovely Deseret collection (as I explained in my review), and even the AML-List review — which gave the collection a mixed grade overall — called this piece a “frank, shoot-from-the-hip story about sexuality among young Mormons that I felt hit the mark quite closely, though not showing redemption from mortal sexual realities.”

That’s exciting. Do other blogs feature fiction?

How long do you want the stories to be (or ‘how short’ I should say…)

Hellmut — LOL, you’re joking right?

Aside from my novel (which I’m serializing), some others in Outer Blogness who have been running fiction include Sideon and A New Eric. (Also possibly Cynthia, but I think her work is mainly poetry.) Over on the faithful side of the fence, there’s Popcorn Popping. There are probably more, but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head.

This series should be a little different from those options though since I think (in the beginning at least) it’s going to be a series of reposts of published short stories by various authors.

    JulieAnn,

I don’t think length is really an issue, since we could always serialize longer pieces.
