Opening the Brodie nominations and closing the X-Mormon of the Year Nominations!

chanson, December 28, 2012December 30, 2012

We’ve got some great nominations for X-Mormon of the Year — you can continue to add nominations until we begin voting on Wednesday, January 2.

And now it’s that time of year again to start collecting the nominations for the Brodie Awards!!!

This is the fourth year of the Brodie Awards. Just have a look at the winners from the last three years to see which excellent sites and works have already won!!!

I’ll start with the proposed categories, and then I’ll follow up with the proposed guidelines:

Year-long awards for people and websites:

  • Best New Blog
  • Best Discussion Forum
  • Best Humor/Satire Site or Blog
  • Best faithful-perspective Mormon Blog
  • Best LDS-Interest Audio/Video Channel/Series
  • Best LDS-Interest Photo Blog

Awards for Individual Works:

  • Best LDS-Interest Book (Fiction)
  • Best LDS-Interest Book (Non-fiction)
  • Funniest Humor Piece
  • Best LDS-Interest Comic or Image
  • Best Poem
  • Most Amusing Vignette or Personal Anecdote
  • Most Poignant Personal Story
  • Best Deconversion/Exit Story
  • Best “Mormon Life Journey” Post
  • Most Insightful Discussion of Mormon Beliefs, Practices, and Culture
  • Best Philosophical/Theological Discussion
  • Best Response to Apologetics
  • Best Discussion of Mormon (or former-Mormon) Community
  • Most Interesting Interfaith Interaction
  • Best Chat with the Bishop, Mishies, or Other Church Leaders
  • Best LDS Church Watch
  • Best News Reporting
  • Best LDS-Related Political Commentary
  • Best Religion-and-Gender Discussion
  • Best Religion-and-Homosexuality Discussion
  • Best Religion-and-Race Discussion
  • Best Religion-and-Parenting Discussion
  • Best Erotic or Sexual Piece
  • Best History Piece
  • Best Science Piece
  • Best Review
  • Best Post Title

As you know, the idea behind the Brodies is to highlight excellent work from all over the LDS-interest Internet, and introduce as many people as possible to great blogs they may not be aware of. Last year’s guidelines worked pretty well, so let’s use them again this year:

  • Please nominate as many people, sites, and articles as you want. However, please do not nominate more than two individual works by any one author.
  • You are allowed (even encouraged!) to nominate your own works. No more than two, though.
  • Please nominate works that first appeared during 2012.
  • Please try to nominate people and works that have some connection with Mormonism or with Outer Blogness (eg. either the work touches on Mormonism, or the author is a current or former Mormon and/or is an active participant in our community).
  • A category must have at least three nominations in order to be included in the voting and awards phase.
  • You may suggest your own categories — however please do it as early as possible in the nominations process, to give others plenty of time to add nominations in your proposed categories.
  • Any other proposed changes to the categories or to the guidelines are welcome — feel free to discuss it in the comments.
  • The nominations will be open for two weeks. (And I’ll add my own nominations when I make the polls.)

I can’t wait to review all of the best works from 2012!!!

Not only poignant, but a very sad discussion of his dad’s “Final Dismissal.” This sentence in particular struck me: “…it wasn’t so much that I was afraid of the animal, but that I was afraid of doing something wrong that would elicit a verbal and abusive tirade from my dad.”

@33 I think the best bet would be to change the “photography blog” category (which is generally a small one) and have a category for blogs that are specialized to showcase a particular type of artistic work. So the blog of Hymn parodies would fit, as would a blog that is just artwork, etc.

Does that seem reasonable? Any other suggestions…?

I am absolutely thrilled to see how many people are getting excited about these awards and getting in their nominations early!! I think this is the liveliest year so far!

(However, I would like to remind people that — as per the guidelines — each person should only nominate two works by any one author, including self-nominations.)

I don’t know what category this blog should go in–maybe LDS Interest/photo? Anyhow it’s a good one! http://thecottonfloozy.blogspot.com

@63 Your two pieces are nominated in the same category. I don’t want people to have to compete against themselves. Would you like me to move one of them to a different category, or would you prefer to have them combined (so people can vote for the pair of stories as “most poignant personal story”)?

@67 I’m not really attached to what the categories are so I’ll leave you to figure it out. But one did explicitly tie it to Mormonism where the other one didn’t mention it. That might suggest category placement. But when it comes to the most poignant personal story for me it would I would nominate myself for the “but I was only 5” story.

I would like to nominate myself for the “horseback riding with my dad” but I don’t know what other category it would fit under.

Honestly, I don’t really have a strong preference. I’m just glad that Diane noticed me. 🙂

@68 They’re both great, and I’m glad they were nominated!

Maybe I could put the horse one in the “Best Mormon Life Journey” category…? It’s not specifically LDS, but I think that’s the closest fit, and I’d really prefer not to create a situation where your two posts have to compete with each other for the same award.

I don’t normally haunt the exMo communities (being more in the currentMo category), but as this post of mine ended up on Reddit’s ExMormon board a few months back and got me a fair bit of traffic I feel it’s a worth nominee for some kind of “Funniest Post” category. People in all sorts of relationships with the church seem to like it:

    @71 Excellent, looks great!

And you got it in just under the wire, too. I meant to finish the polls yesterday, but I got so caught up re-reading all these cool old posts that I didn’t have time to finish. I’ll be putting up the polls this morning.
