what’s wrong with this photo

profxm, September 21, 2012September 22, 2012

Just read this story in the LA Times about Mitt’s religion influencing his politics. It led with this photo:

The caption for the photo read:

The Relief Society of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rancho Cucamonga meets on a Sunday morning. Mormons’ communal spirit rests side by side with a strong belief in individual responsibility. (Dan Krauss, Los Angeles Times / September 21, 2012)

Anyone notice what is “out of place”? Or, in Sesame Street terms, “Two things are not like the others.”

Orientation, Selfishness and Female Ordination

April 23, 2011May 31, 2011

Many Mormons understand their orientation to be to their spouse. This is commendable, because it demonstrates dedication and fidelity. However, a spouse for Latter-day Saints means someone of the opposite gender. Homosexuality gets compartmentalized as an affliction that can lead to selfishness if not kept in check. This selfishness is…

Sunday in Outer Blogness: What women want edition!

March 9, 2014

You may have heard that the New York Times published an article on female Mormon missionaries and how cool they are! Mormon women like it for its tone and accuracy: The tone was perfect—respectful without lapsing into the reverence or romanticizing a church publication so often displays for missionary work;…

Transcript of Boyd Packer’s Address at Multi-Stake Conference

October 31, 2007January 15, 2011

Editorial Note: I have previously reported about rumors of Boyd Packer’s and Gordon Hinckley’s response to criticism of Julie Beck’s conference address, which has not only been discussed with a variety of points of view on the Bloggernacle and the DAMU but also by readers posting on the websites of…

Oh my. Seems that this was one of those Sundays when some of the bishopric dropped in to oversee things. Can’t be too careful . . .

I love that you’d never see women in a Priesthood meeting, but two members of the bishopric can stop in any time to check out Relief Society.

Looks like the bishopric wants to make sure the women aren’t going to get out of line. Which is depressing, really.

And they have two men..why? Because the men are restricted from being with women “alone”..they might be tempted or trapped by lust or might be accused of “taking advantage” of them…what’s odd is how much that is like Islam.

You know it was RS though since there is a table cloth and blocks with letters on the table, as well as notebooks for taking roll and passing out information and announcements. I wonder if the Bishopbric signed up to have the missionaries over for dinner.

The other less charitable thought I had when I looked at this was, did they make all the “little old ladies” stay home from church, or just all sit behind the bishopbric?
