Sunday in Outer Blogness: Changing of the guard edition!

chanson, April 26, 2015April 26, 2015

The CoJCoL-dS has a very interesting way of including God in the process of deciding who gets to be the next supreme leader: of the eligible prophets, seers, and revelators, the president is the one with the most seniority that God hasn’t killed. Yet.

Now it looks like God is getting ready to retire some leaders. Unfortunately, this system makes it a little creepy and morbid to do something completely ordinary like pick your favorite new leaders or calculate whether your favorite might win. (For additional fun with Mormon images see here.)

To keep teens from leaving the faith, BCC proposes more service projects, and W&T listed the discarded ideas. Maybe stop with the licked cupcake metaphor…?

And thus started my “repentance process.” I tried to be sincere but the fact of the matter was I didn’t feel bad about having sex. I wish I’d had a nicer boy to have sex WITH but the act itself didn’t make me feel like a “licked cupcake” no matter how many lessons I sat through.

Thinker of Thoughts analyzed one alleged lie that was printed in the ill-fated Nauvoo Expositor.

Mormon Hurt recounted how it feels to read D&C 132 as a a faithful LDS female:

This felt exhilarating to me. I was all on board. I had grown up cherishing the idea of exaltation as the fulfillment of my true potential and the only feeling of complete joy. Godhood, having “all power,” inheriting thrones and kingdoms, having angels as my subjects . . . this was more than I could imagine. This was heady stuff.

Ten minutes later, I would be stripped of any such dreams of power or joy. None of that would be left for me as the female component of the new and everlasting covenant.

What would it look like if the CoJCoL-dS ruled the world?

They would tell women that they are so special that they do not need to work. They would tell women that men needed to learn the skills that women naturally have. They would tell women to be happy in the home and if they wanted other work, to volunteer in their community. They would tell women that if they don’t like cooking and cleaning then they better pray to like it because that’s what women are meant to do.

The EJ&T project has gotten up to the commandments in the New Testament. In our Gospel Doctrine for the Godless lesson, Daniel Midgley explained the problems with the “try it out” approach to discerning truth:

Believers seem okay with this experimentation method that Jesus is advocating, but are they okay with it in other areas? Would they agree that the same is true for Buddhism, Hinduism, or Islam? The same people who encourage religious experimentation (for their religion only) also discourage experimenting with recreational chemicals and alternative sexual practices. Clearly, they don’t believe that the method is so great; only insofar as it ensnares people into their system.

In book news this week, Alex Hansen (who regularly blogs about the Book of Mormon and won a 2013 Brodie Award for it) has written a book that made it to #1 free kindle e-book in the LDS category!

So what’s up with the Hugo Awards? Adult Onset Atheist explained a bit:

From what little I could stomach of his blog it appears to me that Vox is also a climate change denier, and generally antiscience. What is he doing even being considered as a science fiction anything? If he is what has become of the best of the genre then I will start reading romance novels or something.

In life journeys, Chelsey Sidler-Lartey described the emotional abuse she grew up with, Novus Homo recounted his childhood experiences with sports, Profet learned some beautiful life lessons from a man named Rob, Runtu shared some thoughts about war, and Donna Banta learned what happens when people leave the church.

Happy reading!!
