Sunday in Outer Blogness: Late Again Edition!

chanson, November 13, 2011

I project that my real-life schedule should lighten up sometime, but unfortunately it won’t be this week or next week. Fortunately, all the other bloggers of Outer Blogness (and beyond) have come through with tons of great posts! Here are some highlights:

Non-believers can’t seem to win — non-belief can always be blamed on caring too much or not enough. This helpful diagram should make it all clear. You can lapse in one religion, and still not quite be welcome in another. Discussions across belief lines can be a challenge. So you find your way and learn to be happy in your own skin.

The “Circling the Wagons” conference was a big success. Sexuality has such a range of possible expressions.

For all you correlation buffs, here are some picky rulebooks and their consequences. (Perhaps flexibility works better? Don’t do this to your kids.)

For history buffs, there were some interesting articles this week on Mormonism’s key fronts: gender, race, and marriage (polygamy), and a bonus about some hippy prophet. (Plus: what’s up with Mormons and the symbol of the cross?)

In the department of embracing doubt, believers are capable of asking hard questions about theology.

News highlights: The western black rhino is now extinct, and (unrelated) responding to hate with love.

For this week’s birthday blogs, here are some interesting cupcakes. And let’s wrap up with some more amusing images! Happy Monday morning!

Brazen Religion

I’m often torn when I think about religion. As aerin noted last week, sometimes religion does seem to be authentically helpful for some people. But then there are people like the Copelands, of Texas, who preach the “prosperity gospel,” which is basically fraud (promising something you don’t deliver to get…

According to aMormon Times report of BYU Education Week, that first bit of litter that misses the trash can is the beginning of the slippery slope to divorce court. That’s right. Littering, among a litany of other behaviors, is a form of selfishness, and selfishness destroys marriage. The list included…

Amazing isn’t it? Boys have so many opportunities to read/watch stories about boys — it’s crazy to forbid them the slightest opportunity of reading about somebody else…

Yeah, but I wonder if we aren’t missing the backstory here? Have you seen that Doubt movie (the one with Meryl Streep as a nun)? There’s a scene with a student’s mother that could be relevant to why Mr. Hackman’s random mom was panicking.
