Sunday in Outer Blogness: Unlikely Pairs Edition!

chanson, May 2, 2010January 15, 2011

Is it just my imagination, or did the posts of Outer Blogness seem to come in pairs this week? I mean, just look at two of the goals that were posted. Since one of the points of this weekly roundup is to encourage cross-blog discussion, I hope this random pairing will lead to some fruitful cross-fertilization!

Here are some more matches:

Why did it take so long to figure it out? The church, that is (for Daniel), and orientation (for Reina).

Stopping interfaith dialog in its tracks? We have both theory and practice.

And what about living an open, honest, authentic life as closely aligned as possible with one’s basic ideas about how the world works? healthy or self-centered depravity?

And how about those new LDS eco-meetinghouses? Sustainable or not so much?

And what about the morals a church can teach about how to treat racial minorities? One can uplift people by teaching understanding, or one can, well, do something else…

And that documentary? 8: The Mormon Proposition? We highlighted a critical review earlier, and here’s another interesting take on it. (The new trailer looks great, BTW.)

And who can forget the Tea-Baggers? Austin Cline points out how deafeningly silent they are about a genuine example of the government trying to infringe upon people’s individual liberties (the Arizona “Papers, please” law). Daniel provides the counterpoint that these guys are “be-clowning” themselves.

On the other end of the political spectrum, actual Mormons are celebrating May Day!!! The Swearing Elders covered the story. John R is also celebrating May Day with (less faithful?) Mormons.

Now, that should provide you with plenty of interesting discussion topics for this week! Happy Sunday! 😀

I’m reading Polly Aird’s “Mormon Convert, Mormon Defector: A Scottish Immigrant in the American West, 1848-1861” this week. Between what’s happening in AZ and The Faithful Dissident’s latest post, a discussion of Aird’s book might be timely. Has anyone else read it? I’d read BCC’s short review, so I expected to be reading about “some of the most egregious failures of Mormon society to self-regulate” … but I’m 2/3rds through the book, and it reads like “Lord of the Flies.” OMG.
