Sunday in Outer Blogness: Easter Edition!

chanson, April 12, 2009September 3, 2011

Happy Easter everyone! I would do an Easter-themed roundup, but it seems not too many in Outer Blogness have blogged about it. I figure that either (like me!) they don’t have that much to say about Easter, or they’re so busy painting eggs that they don’t have time to blog. But, just so that the faithful Mormons don’t worry that we’re going soft on them, I’ll present you with this year’s post on why the Mormons are wrong to de-emphasize Easter. Faithful Mormons may feel free to totally dismiss this guy’s opinion, however, since I heard a rumor that he just got a rad new sinful tattoo.

Now, on to politics, and a bevy of unfortunately-chosen terms and acronyms. Specifically, the New Order Mormons will be unhappy to learn that their acronym has been co-opted by the straights-only marriage folks, and, as chronicled by (((billy))), it’s all downhill from there, with the theocrats taking up kinky hobbies like “teabagging” and cruising the 2M4M personals. Chino provides some great video rebuttals to the actors who are afraid of the “brewing storm,” and Paul Sunstone posts an essay on Helping Those with Mormon Interests. In unrelated political news, people are concerned that Obama has been increasing rather than reducing the Bush-era unconstitutional use of presidential power.

On to the boring stuff: blogroll admin. (I’ll add the “more” divider here!) In another example of blogrolling dumping useful features (when implementing their fabulous billing system), it appears that the “most recently updated” blogs are no longer automatically calculated via RSS. If you’d like to be sure that your blog appears at the top of the Outer Blogness “26 most recently updated” list after you post, then you have to go to Blogrolling and ping your blog in this special ping form. Sorry about the inconvenience! All I can say is that if you’re also on Mojoey’s Atheist Blogroll, a single ping should be sufficient to mark you as recently updated on both.

What do Mormons believe? Seems like nobody really knows. I could swear they were once the church of modern-prophets-filling-in-the-Bible-gaps-with-concrete-answers. Then “correlation” came along and stamped out all of those (controversial!) specifics, and replaced them with a short list of vague warm-fuzzies like “faith” and “tithing”. But that hasn’t stopped the…

It all started when I read this story from the bizarre-yet-eerily-familiar parallel universe of growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness. Then HH had a nostalgic-weird-coincidence moment. Is it something in the air? Or is it “Talk Thursday” that has folks reminiscing about life-altering memories? And about finding your personal history’s…

The Josh Duggar incest/molestation scandal has been the big topic of discussion and analysis this past week. These guys aren’t Mormons, but the story has strong resonance for us because of their tradition’s familiar attitudes about sexuality, gender roles, and family: In the LDS church, there was a massive focus…

Thanks for the heads up. Yet another meaning for ‘NOM’ of which I was, until recently, unaware.

(((Billy))) — Thanks for gathering all of those interesting tidbits! 😉

Oh, yeah, and now that I think about it, I should have linked the New Order Mormons’ site in case anyone reading here is unfamiliar with the term. But, as you’ll find in the handy guide to different types of Mormons, a New Order Mormon is “Someone who disbelieves key doctrines of Mormonism yet actively chooses to practice Mormonism.” (Usually, but not always, for the sake of family unity.)
