Sunday in Outer Blogness: Patriotic Politics Edition!

chanson, August 9, 2009November 9, 2011

Apologies to those outside the U.S., but it seems like the health care debate has heated things up to to point where Outer Blogness has practically forgotten to talk about religion.

While Holly is telling Senators about God’s will, Curtis lays out the case for health care reform, and Djinn (who explains how your health care can be canceled if you get sick) wonders if Sarah Palin’s claims about national health care involving “death panels” comes from the voices in her head. That, or perhaps from this email of insanity. But what can one expect from Obama, considering that he’s an alien from the Slzrd Star System and drinks suspicious foreign beers like Bud Light.

At least the Mormons are helping out on the question of Obama’s pedigree:
obamas_genealogy (hat tip Dancing with Crazy and Yes, I am). (On a tangentially related note, Suspicious Minds went to mormon.org to have a chat about the curse of Cain.)

In sustainability, we have an interesting program called cash for clunkers, and the connection between DIY and the environment. (LittleMissAttitude is also knitting.)

Now, on to religion! We’ve been reading a lot of BCC this week! Andrew finds Brad’s piece delightfully subversive, whereas Living with Mormons had a slightly less positive experience. His critical response to Margaret Young’s post was apparently deleted from the comments section. Marcus and Hypatia are both navigating the difficult waters of coming out as non-believers to their families. Many of you here have been through similar situations and can perhaps offer support and advice. Brent also got a small town reality check about being an out atheist.

On a totally unrelated note, Emily’s friend Reed Cowan asks us to spread the word about unsafe playground equipment, in memory of his son Wesley.

In events, note that the Exmormon Foundation 2009 Conference is coming up: from October 9th to 11th! It will include the premier of the documentary In the Shadow of the Temple. Are any of you guys planning to attend?

finally, someone tells it like it is with Romney

There’s a good NYTimes article up today talking about Lawrence O’Donnell’s comments on Romney’s religion. O’Donnell finally came out and said what those of us in Outer Blogness have been thinking all along, “Why hasn’t anyone mentioned that Romney’s religion was officially racist until 1978 (and is still unofficially racist…

Here is a common problem faced by faithful Mormons: A few years ago, Sam and I attended an endowment session at the Salt Lake Temple. As we approached the gate, a man stood on the public sidewalk a few feet away, holding a sign that read: Joseph Smith had 27…

Has Trump finally crossed the line? Nothing Trump said in the leaked recording is particularly surprising coming from him, but maybe hearing it in his own voice will end some of the denial…? And it looks like the Mormons are first in line to dump Trump! As I’ve said before,…

Thanks for linking to my article, and what a cool blog. I am sure that you will run into my friend C.L. Hanson at the ExMormon convention, too.

Thanks Mike! Actually, I’m going to the Sunstone Symposium, and I can’t justify flying out to Utah for two Mormon-related conferences in one season. I might go to the Exmormon Foundation Conference at some point, though. That’s where I set the concluding chapter of my novel. 😉
