BYU Considers Conveniently Changing YouTube Policy

profxm, June 6, 2009

After starting its own YouTube channel with faith-promoting messages, there is now talk that BYU might lift its ban on the formerly evil YouTube. Now wouldn’t that be an intriguing change in policy:

  • Prior policy: YouTube has bad stuff on it, so it is not acceptable. Plus, students are not capable of policing themselves, so we’ll do it for them.
  • New policy: Well, people are spending time on YouTube, and since it’s an effective tool for spreading a message, we’ll use it. And it probably looks bad if the official religion uses it but students at our flagship university are too immature to use it.

Of course, this is still tentative. It’s not like the LDS Church avoids making transparently expedient changes in policy (e.g., 1853 “Marriage is divine only if a man has 3 wives.” 2008 “Marriage should be between ONE man and ONE woman!”).

I’m happy that they’re willing to make changes. I just wish they would admit when they’ve made a mistake (or at least admit when they’ve learned something).
