Guys, there were some really fantastic posts in 2009, so you get two weeks to review the nominees!! Take your time reviewing them. Polls close February 22. Good luck everyone, and have fun!

  3. Wry — Actually some of your nominations are indeed there. For example, it was because of your list that I added the LOLdamuz (as a whole) to the “best humorous site”, and also because of your suggestions that I made a point to find a post to include from Equality’s site.

    But the problem is you didn’t include links! I hate to be the lazy one — and I did my best to track down some of the nominations where the links were either wrong or absent — but if I couldn’t find the post(s) in question, I didn’t include them.

  4. Disclaimers:

    I included as many nominations as possible, but some nominations were excluded for the following reasons (1) I could not find the relevant link, (2) I couldn’t find an appropriate category that had at least one other nominee.

    I promise to do better next year. Now I see that we need to start with a specific list of categories to make it easier for people to nominate sites, posts, and people in a coherent way — instead of me gathering up all of the nominations and trying to group them as best as possible. Please bear with me on this initial round…

Hey, I came over here because people were linking from here to my blog and I was trying to figure out how they were coming over as I don’t see my blog on the blogroll (it’s probably the only blog on Mormonism in the entire world that is not on that blogroll). 🙂 Anyhow, I finally figured out where the link was.     In the Brodies, a few people said I should win a Brodie for my work at Main Street Plaza. I assume they were just brown-nosing 😉 but I decided to go with it. But then I had to nominate a couple of worthy opponents! 😀

    Jessica — I just added you. Now we’ll be following your blog so next year you can be nominated for more than just a comment by Seth. 😉

    You’re actually not the only one who got a nomination without already being on the blogroll. I’m glad. This is a fun way to introduce people to sites they weren’t aware of.

  15. Bloopers I’ve noticed since I posted this last night:

    I should have thought to add The Bloggernacle Back Burner in the “Best Humor Site” category. (Note: somebody else might also have thought to nominate him. 😉 )

    I’m sure there are lots of other deserving sites and posts that we missed. I went back through a year’s worth of posts and added a bunch of nominations myself, but it was a quick pass, and I didn’t have time to re-check every link I’d saved from the past year. If you are reading this and you feel bad that your work wasn’t nominated, then you should have come by during the nominations phase and nominated yourself. 😉

    There was one other fMh post that got nominated, but I set it aside, waiting for their site to come back up. Then I forgot about it. Sorry, it was not intentional.

    I think maybe “best bridge-building with the faithful” should have been “best bridge-building with the differently-believing” or something like that.

    Any other comments, suggestions, or criticisms are welcome! This is fun, but I expect we’ll do a more professional job next year (since this will be planned instead of being thrown together at the last minute).

    I suppose I should say something measured here, but in response to a lot of the defenses of Mormon status quo

    This Church is HUGE on religious symbolism. The symbolism and ceremony is a crucial part of Mormon identity and practice in the LDS faith. Symbolism is such a big part of Mormon worship that we are constantly getting crap about it from blue-jean Evangelicals (sorry Jack). Its pretty dang important.

    And let me put it bluntly:

    Symbolically, in the LDS Church, women suck.

  19. Why aren’t author’s names given with most of the articles/posts? If I have to click through each title to remember what it is, I’m spending more time with this poll than I do reading anything mormon-related in a week. And after, the page doesn’t snap back to which category I was reading in. Sorry to be grumbly, but, I don’t got all day and the coffee maker is broken.

Go figure that the Brodies have managed to attract the same bunch of agitators that plagued comments in that PBS post re Helen Whitney’s “The Mormons” … IIRC, the complaint back then was: Who are these people and who allowed them to occupy so much precious screen time with nary a flash of names or credentials?

  25. Why arent authors names given with most of the articles/posts? If I have to click through each title to remember what it is, Im spending more time with this poll than I do reading anything mormon-related in a week.

    I have to admit, I did it this way on purpose because — with the Niblets — when I saw the name of one of my favorite bloggers, I just voted for that person’s post without even reading the others. I was kind of hoping to encourage people to have a look at all the entries, even ones by less-well-known authors.

    However, if people don’t like this system (and would rather see the names at a glance), I’ll take this as one of the changes to note for next year.

    And after, the page doesnt snap back to which category I was reading in.

    That’s a good point. I’m in such a habit of “right-click-open-in-new-tab” that I wasn’t thinking about the fact that that might not be convenient in some browsers.

    I’d wanted to include the discussion forums in these awards, and it hit me that I’d foolishly neglected to include a “best discussion forum” category.

  35. Mike — I really don’t know what happened. There was some very strange behavior from Poll Daddy. When I logged onto the Poll Daddy site and listed my polls, all of them were shown as having closed at the right time. But on this page, about half of them showed up as still open. Fortunately, there’s a manual “close poll” option, so I manually closed the ones that failed to close correctly…

    I actually suspect that it may be a problem with PollDaddy. On my list of polls (on my PollDaddy account) the “Brodies: best LDS church watch” category shows up as having zero votes, whereas here it clearly has votes…
