Sunday in Outer Blogness: The Mormon Moment Edition!

chanson, April 3, 2011November 9, 2011

It’s not just a musical anymore, it’s in sci-fi films, books, and other interesting plays, even politics — everything is coming up Mormon!!!

Meanwhile — rather than capitalizing on it with another shocker-conference — the CoJCoL-dS decided to go with their previous conference strategy of boring the pants off everyone — that way nobody but the true believers will pay attention to what they say (well, almost). The big surprise was that they neglected to harp on pornography this time. The highlights included the tasty cinnamon rolls. Well, there was always the Kirtland Temple anniversary and some April fools jokes.

Outside the conference center, however, there were quite a lot of fascinating discussions about Mormonism and race (note: the Mormons aren’t the only ones who have race problems). See also gender and sexuality. Then, after addressing the standard issues, there were some interesting points of Mormon theology, metaphysics, history, doctrine, and philosophy (such as decisions and dichotomies). There’s magic and evidence, how to keep your testimony, what to do if that doesn’t work, how to explain away the people who leave, belief and dissonance, and giving God’s goodness the benefit of the doubt.

After that, there were a couple of amusing news items as well as news on how people are getting along with family.

I hope you and your families have had a nice weekend. We had lovely weather here in Zurich, so we went to the Botanical Gardens (as did a sizeable portion of Zurich, it turns out, but it was fun), and then we watched “Totoro” while I sewed patches on all of the pairs of pants that my kids have worn the knees out of this past school year. A pleasant Sunday overall — I hope yours was too! 😀

Wow, the Mormon Moment hit a couple of big snags this past week!! First off, despite all of the media attention focused on Mormonism, the CoJCoL-dS simply can’t resist excommunicating people. So guess what is all over the news? Mormon with outspoken blog posts on church says may face excommunication!…

If you’re a faithful Mormon, there are a lot of possible ways to rationalize the various sticky issues of the CoJCoL-dS. Take the problem of Joseph Smith “marrying” a bunch of teenagers and married women, and lying to his wife and everyone else about it — it can be explained…

Glad you had nice weather for “Conference” weekend. We did here in SF too. Thanks for the double shout out! And yes, what little I watched of GC was painfully boring!
