I caught this story in the local paper today about a bunch of conservative Christians (no Mormons were mentioned specifically) criticizing the Marriott hotel chain for providing porn in the hotels. The critics of the hotel specifically suggested that the hotel chain was hypocritical for peddling porn but claiming ‘wholesome family values.’ I doubt anything will come of it (unless the conservative Christians can actually cost the hotel more money than they are making with the porn), but it’s interesting to see someone else criticize the hotel for this. Also, as mentioned on the previous thread about the ex’d calendar maker, there is some irony here: one shows topless guys and gets whacked; the other shows hardcore porn and gets patted on the back.

Hi Everyone. DJ Williams, a somewhat infrequent commenter on MSP, recently published a book that, while not primarily about Mormonism, addresses it as it relates to BDSM. I recently read and reviewed the book and DJ has agreed to respond to comments on MSP. Here’s the review: Even though the…

I’ve never gotten this charge against Marriot. It’s not in-your-face channel surfing porn. It’s not like car refinish shop wallpaper. The guest has to select and pay for the porn.
And yes, the church was stupid ex’ing the calendar guy. He played them like a fiddle.
the ‘fact’ that some (most?) Mariott locations/properties are franchised or leased doesn’t cut anything, perhaps Mariott retains the PPV revenue.
In any event, most franchisors get a % of all the action….
Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.

I dont’ have anything against Marriott for selling porn… Hell, I look at porn. It just proves to be a visible annoying double standard in how the church deals with business is approves of or disapproves of.
Maybe if Calendar Guy had just paid his tithing on the proceeds of the calendar, they would have left him alone.
