One Utah: Some Powerful Words
I guess we’ll find out soon enough. In the meantime, here’s the latest rebel transmission from ice planet Hoth.
And the text of the full intercept: My name is Dustin and Im an Ex mormon.
This will only resonate within the ex-mormon community. The broader response will be: geez, just put it behind you and get on with your life. But of course that never happens…
You could be right, Ron. Thanks for your predictably dismissive TBM response. By the way, what’s your take on the Book of Mormon musical? Potential phenom or DOA? Whatever your opinion of Trey Parker, Matt Stone or Robert Lopez, they don’t seem like the kind of guys who’d misjudge the moment and launch a dud that nobody’s interested in seeing. The potential audience for these ex-mo videos is admittedly much smaller than for South Park, but my sense is that there’s a segment of the burgeoning atheist ranks that’ll swell the fan base for this “… and I’m an ex-Mormon” project beyond your expectations.
@Ron, until the Church stops interfering with my families and friends lives, then I will continue to speak out. Get them to stop interfering and you’ll see a lot of this go away.
????”You may be right, you may be RON.
I have had a person from another country thanking me for sharing my story in one of those ads because she had just realized that the she did not believe the ‘church is true’; whatever the hell that might mean. It gave her the courage to face up to it and say those words to herself – I am an Ex-Mormon. These videos are reaching to the ends of the earth and no unhallowed hand can stop them.
@Ron. I don’t know why people have a problem with these videos, Go read Christian courage by Hales and have some faith in the words of the prophets; for if their words are true then these videos will do more good than harm from an LDS viewpoint. I surely don’t believe the words of the prophets and I think these videos will be integral in tipping the scales for the numerous fence sitters in the church, much to the dismay of believing members. lds.org/general-conference/2008/10/christian-courage-the-price-of-discipleship?lang=eng
I find the ex-Mormon videos far more interesting then the “i am a mormon” vids. These are really insightful stories of self acceptance and discovery of truth. I love them! (but I am an inactive– thinking of becoming ex– mormon, so I guess I fit Bob’s description.)
I watched a few of the “I’m an ex mormon” that are a spin off of the real videos.I watched the videos since I wanted to see why people left that church. That led me to this site which seems to be just a place of Hate, so much hate and propaganda. Makes me not want to be a part of any organized religion. These types of videos just make all religions seem wrong. I am now waiting for the “I’m an ex Baptist”, “I’m an ex Catholic”, “I’m an ex Protestant” So on and so forth, videos of that nature.
Re: “That led me to this site which seems to be just a place of Hate, so much hate and propaganda.”
Well, thanks for being such a ray of sunshine yourself, as opposed to being a source of knee-jerk hate…
Awe, thank you Chanson. This site should be a place where people say how proud there are of the individuals for finding their own path in life. It shouldn’t be a place where people bash and tear down others. That is a form of cyber bullying. I am glad that that people in the videos are happy with their choice. I am just sad at all the hate filled comments people turn towards individuals and certain religions.
Lee @9- There are many posts on this site that talk about people who found their own path. Most of the posts that I’ve seen that can be considered hateful are just people who feel that they have been deeply wronged by the church and are writing posts reflect what they perceive as injustices or hipocracy within the church.
If you’d like to go to a site which is good at presenting all sides of all the issues with Mormonism, you should go to: MormonThink
@10 Good points. You’re right that we should give Lee the benefit of the doubt that “this site which seems to be just a place of Hate” isn’t just idle trolling.
The thing to keep in mind is that criticism against the other guys can often look like “OK, harsh, but accurate…” whereas harsh criticism in the other direction can look like “so much hate and propaganda.” Try reading what the CoJCoL-dS unabashedly claims about us before throwing stones.
Thank you for your thoughtful responses Chris and Chanson. I wasn’t trying to make anyone feel bad about themselves or have self doubt. I think that it is great that people are choosing their own way in life. It just seemed like there were a lot more negative comments than positive.
@12 I realize that this site has a dominance of negative comments about the LDS Church and community, but that is because until recently, unless I am mistaken (I have only been coming here for about 6 months, compared to chanson, who was one of the ones who built this site from the virtual ground up several years ago), this site has primarily been for ex-Mormons. The site has recently been moved to a new server and with that move, some changes were made to reflect an interest in discussions about mormonism in general and not just ex-Mormon issues and issues that ex-Mormons have with the Church.
I, for one, would welcome any input that you could bring to the discussions here. I believe that a perspective from an open-minded active member is a valuable addition to a site like this. Though I would advise you to carefully word your comments carefully, because, as stated before, the environment of this site is still primarily made up of ex-Mormons; some of whom have been hurt by the church, and thus some comments may be countered by several people who are ready to pounce on comments that may be perceived as pro-Mormon. The discussions rarely turn hostile, but the “…because the Prophet said so.” arguments (and other similar arguments) are not viable here and are put into the same catagory of fallacy as a sports star claiming that a certain underwear is better because it is the brand that they use.
I will keep that warning about the ” because the Prophet said so” In mind. Although I do not see that as being an issue seeing as I am not part of a religion, and don’t have a Prophet telling me what to say or do, haha.
