Last Call for Nominations (X-MooTY & Brodies)!

We’ve got some great nominations so far — keep ’em coming! I’ll be posting the polls here at Main Street Plaza shortly. The polls for X-Mormon of the Year will be posted on January 2, 2022, and the polls for the Brodie Awards will be posted on January 9, 2022.

You can continue posting nominations here until those dates. Here’s what we’ve got so far:

X-Mormon of the Year 2020:

  • Jacinda Ardern, ExMo and Prime Minister of New Zealand for her country’s handling of the Covid 19 pandemic.
  • Any other contenders…?

X-Mormon of the Year 2021:

There were a few nominations that either were not clear or did not meet the guidelines:

  • Bill Reel for his podcasts — I would like to move this one to the Brodie Awards, below. X-MoOTY is intended for actions/activism that make news, whereas the Brodies are for creative works. Same story for Johnny Harris.
  • Posthumous award for Robert Ritner — it would probably make sense to also offer lifetime-achievement awards, but this award is specifically for actions during the year in question.
  • Wesley Snipes — Does he have any connection with Mormonism? This one could potentially be a valid nomination if we could get some clarification.
  • Kristen Sinema — I had initially nominated her, but nobody liked that choice, so I withdraw my nomination. I can put her back in again if someone else wants to nominate her.

  1. “Salt Lake Mormons” by Ellie Saint-James seems to be a novel by a member of the LDS Church that has some “gray” areas, according to one review.

  2. Netflix, “Murder among the Mormons,” documentary about Hoffman murders.

  3. “The Touch of the Master’s Hand,” short film (12 minutes), humor, at Sundance 2021

The Touch of The Master’s Hand is an absolute gem by Barnes, a queer filmmaker and alumnus of Brigham Young University who is now pursuing his master’s degree at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts. The main character in this short, which runs just shy of 12 minutes, is Elder Hyde, who is serving his Mormon mission in Mexico. He struggles with deciding whether or not he can overcome his shame and confess his addiction to pornography during his worthiness interview with the mission president. The object of his addiction rightly caps the impact of the absurd humor.

  4. Post Mormon at the Movies, on Instagram, not at all sure what this is.

  5. Band “Imagine Dragons” has a song from 2021 called “Follow You.” It’s not really Mormon in content, just has a Mormon lead singer, and the music video features an actor from the movie “Latter Days” who has gone on to great stardom via “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” Could go under “humor” if it can be included at all.

There are a couple of nominations there:
For book: The Glass Looker by Mark Elwood.
For best analysis piece: Mormonism Live’s “Flight of death” episode.

  7. For those voting for Ex-Mormon of the Year, I just saw this from Sunstone about Jeff Green, one of the nominees:

Not sure if this falls into a current category. Exit story maybe? But Exmo Lex’s story about breaking off contact with her in-laws is very moving and Brodie-worthy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsguWGMVOro

This straight-up review of what appears to be an absolutely ridiculous Deseret Book (via Covenant Communications) title based on a movie you’ve already discussed (here on MSP I believe?) is a possible Brodie nominee. The quotes from the novel at the end are pretty indicative. If nothing else I’ll be reading reviewing it here this year. 😉 https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R14Y12WLSPBL7L/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B093RDRVK3
