Collecting Nominations for the 2010 Brodies!!!

Yes, it’s that time of year again!! Time to recognize the best LDS-interest sites and material posted to the Internet in the past year!!! Look here for last year’s winners — and if you didn’t win last year, this year it could be you!! (Actually, even if you did win last year, you might win again.)

Now, I’d like to start off with a list of suggested categories. This is to simplify the nomination process, but you can also write in new categories if you think I’ve missed any. To be included in the voting, a category must have at least three nominations total (and at least two people must submit nominations for the category). Like last year, it is OK to nominate your own site/post, but please, only suggest categories people would want to win (eg. no “biggest jerk”, etc.). Here we go!

  1. Measure says:

For best discussion board, I would nominate exmormon.reddit.com, postmormon.org, and exmormon.org (because I want to see them lose, of course).

  2. chanson says:

Shall we also nominate the reddit for best (overall) site?

Note: I forgot to include “Best Blog” — consider it added.

  3. chanson says:

Also, “Best Historical post” and “Best Science Post”.

  4. Measure says:

I’m going to nominate a post from reddit’s “CelestialBound” for Best post and Best exit story:

    http://www.reddit.com/r/exmormon/comments/d2yqz/my_review_of_my_disciplinary_council_where_i_got/

CB gives a full accounting of an excommunication.

  5. chanson says:

Wow!! Great story to open the nominations with!

  6. I nominate i-am-an-exmormon.com for best LDS interest site and best new blog 🙂

And I nominate Flackerman for best youtube channel, he HAS to win for something I love his channel:

    http://www.youtube.com/user/FlackerMan

  7. Measure says:

I second the nomination for i-am-an-exmormon.com

  8. Hellmut says:

For best response to apologetics, I nominate Why I Won’t Leave the Mormon Church Alone, a brilliant response by Holly Welker to Boyd Packer’s condescending ridicule that we “can leave the Church but they can’t leave the Church alone.”

  9. Mithryn says:

I second the nomination of exmormon.reddit.com

  10. Mithryn says:

I’ll second this one as well: i-am-an-exmormon.com for best LDS interest site and best new blog

  11. Holly says:

How about “best explanation of Mo theology for outsiders” and “strangest Mo situation/phenomenon”?

  12. Chino Blanco says:

I’d suggest also voting on “Best Mormon Expression episode” … and here are my nominees:

Episode 44: An Interview with Zilpha

Episode 51: Interview with Will Bagley (Part 1 & Part 2)

Episode 76: Mistakes were Made: How not to Leave the Church

  13. Chino Blanco says:

I’m not sure where it belongs, but I want to see this site get nominated for something, dammit: Mormon Correlation Studies

And Christopher Kimball Bigelow’s “Letter to President Packer” deserves a prize.

  14. Kiley says:

Off the top of my head I would nominate Prof Bill Bradshaw for the “Best Bridge Building”. I will have to think of some others!

  15. TGD says:

Most Humorous Rant: Lying for the Lord

Best New Gay Mormon Blog: Invictus Pilgrim

  16. Chino Blanco says:

I want to nominate ProfXM’s post here at MSP: Will this hateful rhetoric continue once Boyd K. Packer has passed on? … maybe file under “Best LDS Church Watch” ?

  17. Hellmut says:

One thing is for sure, Chino and Prof, Boyd Packer will become the most manly among the prophets, seers, and revelators.

  18. Hellmut says:

I nominate Boyd Packer’s conference address as the best bridge building effort ever because no one has driven more traffic to MSP than that man.

  19. chanson says:

    Great suggestions!!

Looking at #13, I think we should probably have a “Best Comic or LOL DAMUZ”.

Regarding podcasts @12, it seems reasonable to have a “Best Podcast Series” (eg. Mormon Expression vs. Mormon Stories) and a separate category for best individual episode.

  20. kuri says:

For Best Deconversion/Exit Story and/or Best Response to Apologetics (I’m not really sure where it fits better): How Star Wars destroyed my faith in God.

  21. Holly says:

I agree that that post by Chris Bigelow deserves a prize. perhaps “Best illustration of Poe’s Law”?

  22. TGD says:

I nominate that anything Christopher Bigelow writes is the Best Illustration of Poe’s Law!

  23. SLK in SF says:

Some great nominations so far. I especially like Holly Welker’s piece (which I’ve read again and again call it “Why I Won’t Leave Holly Welker Alone”). And I’m glad to see Dr. Bradshaw mentioned.

  24. Chino Blanco says:

I nominate this one for Best Humor Site: http://wardgossip.blogspot.com/

  25. MoHoHawaii says:

    Here are my nominations:

Best Bridge-Building: John Dehlin’s podcast interviews. If you need just one, I nominate the interview with Bill Bradshaw, especially segment 4 on homosexuality.

    Best New Blog: Invictus Pilgrim

    Best Book Review:
    The Defense of Fawn Brodie

    Best Philosophical/Religious Post:
Correlation: An Uncorrelated History, in 9 parts

  26. Heather M says:

I nominate http://packham.n4m.org/temples.htm for best humorous post. (Yes, I know it’s simply recounting exactly what happens in temple ceremonies, so the humor is unintentional…)

  32. Andrew S says:

OK, just fished everyone’s nominations out of the filer. Sorry for that!

  33. Chino Blanco says:

Here’s a category suggestion: best DAMU internet handle

    And here’s my nomination: Me_MyZelph_And_I

  34. chanson says:

    Great ideas!!!

BTW, as Andrew notes, these sorts of link-full comments have a tendency to fall into the spam filter, especially if you haven’t posted comments here before.

If you post a nomination and it falls into the spam filter, please email me chanson dot exmormon at gmail dot com so that I will know to fish it out — thanks!

  35. Chino Blanco says:

I nominate this post for Best Comment by a Former Megachurch Pastor:

    http://usu-shaft.com/2010/my-apology-to-pastor-ted-haggard/

  36. Jon A says:

Ha ha, thanks Chino. That’s at least one category that SHAFT will win.

  37. Chino Blanco says:

I just noticed Andrew S’s new post/link above and so maybe this is a good time to mention that I completely agree with the MSP governing board’s decision to limit the Brodie Awards to recognizing excellence in exmo blogging.

Snarky tongue-in-cheek “prizes” for over-the-top bloggernacle posts will be awarded in a separate contest that’s being organized by the r/exmormon bunch. If you’d like to help them decide on a name for this latest bit of exmo silliness, please click here. Cheers.

  38. chanson says:

    Chino — Thanks!

I hope nobody objects, but we’d like everyone to aspire to win a Brodie — not have people wondering whether it’s a good thing or a booby prize. Thus the Reddit exmos will be hosting the awards for the best of the you-can-hardly-believe-it’s-real earnest LDS folly. Please join in the fun and add your suggestions here!!

  39. Chino Blanco says:

I just noticed PostMormon has a thread listing recommended static sites, so I’m stealing their recommendations and posting them here as my nominations for Best Static Site on LDS Issues:

    wivesofjosephsmith.org
    realmormonhistory.com
    mormoncurtain.com
    mormonthink.com
    lds-mormon.com
    20truths.info
    utlm.org
    i4m.com

And I want to add my nomination for best faithful blog:

    Times and Seasons

    Best LDS Church Watch:

    Joanna Brooks @ Religion Dispatches
    Jana Riess @ BeliefNet

    Best Comic/Graphic/LOLDamuz:

Mormon comic submitted to FFFFUUUUUUUUUUU really hits home.
    Mormon Fakebook Update: 1
    LOLDamuz: Let Him Enter

    Best Individual Video:

Hi, My name is Rock, and yep, I’m a Mormon
“Hi, my name is Robert and I’m an Ex Mormon.”
    Examining Holland’s Talk (1 of 5)

  40. LDSOrigins says:

I would like to shamelessly plug the site I put on the internet this last year:

    http://www.ldsorigins.com/

What I think I add to the table is the amount of references I include at the bottom of each history page, plus my interview with an LDS apostle and church historian.

I’m not sure what category it might fit in…perhaps if there was a Best New Information/History Site category.

  41. Miss Piggy says:

I also would like to nominate LDS Origins – I thoroughly enjoyed the writing style and the interviews were most interesting and certainly a different approach.
Then I found “How I became a Formon” sincere and to the point.
As to which categories they fit in I am not sure. Tx

  42. Britta says:

I would like to nominate Ward Gossip for best humor site.
    http://wardgossip.blogspot.com/

  43. Donna Banta says:

I second the nomination for http://mbnalively.blogspot.com/ as best new blog!

  1. December 28, 2010

[…] I ultimately have to second Chino’s nomination of this as the understatement of the year in the comments (maybe it’s not too late for this to be a Brodie category?) […]
