Orson Scott Card: Believers who claim to have heard voices are ‘wackos’

“We already have a science fiction religion, so we never have any conflict between our religion and what we write.” — Orson Scott Card “The secret to life here is finding out what your own religion really is and perhaps adapting it and learning what your religion should be in order to get along with other people.” — Orson Scott Card h/t The One True Podcast And previously at MSP: BYU Management Society to award NOM director Orson Scott Card And very recently … Orson Scott Read more [...]

Vote for the 2009 William Law X-Mormon of the Year!!!

While taking in nominations, I was surprised by how accomplished and undersung X-Mormons are. Fortunately the Mormon Alumni Association is here to remedy the situation with a brand-new yearly award for the X-Mormon who has made the biggest impact!!! And we will make every effort to send the winner a T-shirt (with the official William Law award graphic). Here are the illustrious nominees: Chad Hardy: In 2009 he created a second controversial calendar: Hot Mormon Muffins. He has also been engaged Read more [...]

Announcing the William Law X-Mormon of the Year Award!!

You may have seen that Times and Seasons elected Harry Reid “Mormon of the Year” for 2009. Then — not to be outdone — BCC created the Boggs-Doniphan “Gentile of the Year” Award, and awarded it to Stephen Colbert. Well, it’s time for Main Street Plaza to get into the game!! Suggested by our own Chino Blanco — who also provided the fabulous graphic! — Main Street Plaza will be hosting the 2009 X-Mormon of the Year Award. Before we start the election, we need to make a couple of decisions. Read more [...]

8: The Mormon Proposition (Pre-Sundance Update)

This past May, I caught up with documentary filmmaker Reed Cowan, who didnt shy away from answering some pointed (and personal) questions about 8: The Mormon Proposition. As the first NYU grad in my familys six generations of Mormons, go figure that Id be personally interested in both Mormonism and film (nevermind Mormons on film!). In other words, since that initial interview with Reed, Ive been anxiously hoping that hed keep me in the loop as the film progressed. After bugging Reed for an update, Read more [...]

A quick Q&A with Todd Whitaker about that testimony of his

Todd Whitaker recently bore his testimony. The video of Todd testifying to his ward has now gone viral. As you may have seen, it was not your typical Mormon F&T meeting fare. I caught up with Todd by email and he agreed to answer a few questions. CB: Before we get started, I just wanted to mention a comment I noticed on another board that neatly described my own reaction the first time I watched your clip: “This video has many layers of win.” From your deadpan delivery of some harsh Read more [...]

Sunday in Outer Blogness: The Dead and the Living Edition!

The buzz this week was all about how President Obama’s dead mom has been let out of spirit prison (or something like that). I ought to be dutifully rounding up every single post on the subject, but — no offense — everybody said exactly the same things they say every time this subject comes up. I’ll give you the short version: A: “But you don’t understand how deeply offensive and disrespectful it is to the deceased’s beliefs!” B: “What? One religion offended and disrespected another? No. Way. Read more [...]

Celebrating African Americans in Europe

Although Europeans suffer just as much, if not more, from racism as Americans, accomplished African Americans have traditionally received more respect on the old continent than in their home country. This 1988 video of France Gall’s tribute to Ella Fitzgerald is one example of that dynamic. By 1988, of course, Fitzgerald was universally admired. Still the choice of images, which depict many more African American performers, is instructive. These days, European racism tends to target immigrants. Read more [...]

I was just interviewed by Minnesota Atheists Talk Radio about my novel Exmormon! You can download the interview and listen to it as a podcast here. As I said on my personal blog, my interview was fairly Mormon-friendly — download it and see for yourself. My mom even said I did a good job!!! :D Read more [...]

Motes and Beams

I am fascinated by the reaction to Lawrence O’Donnell’s criticism of Mormon orthodoxy. I understand why many Mormons would feel hurt by O’Donnell’s criticism. Personally, I don’t have a problem with O’Donnell’s criticism, in part, because I find it difficult to disagree with him and, in part, I have embraced the reality that my heritage, which has bestowed many privileges and opportunities upon me, is inseparably intertwined with various aspects of evil. Due to my own journey, I appreciate, however, Read more [...]
